What do want to accomplish at the end of each term, and the end of the school year? What do you want to learn, research, experience? This isn’t solely for grades but what types of club, activities, and athletics do you want to get involved in? Are there field trips and excursions you want to pursue? Do you have to fundraise this year to get to where you want to be? Goal setting is vital to a productive year. Set attainable goals and monitor your progress. I always find it helpful to write my goals down in the front of my planner or set them as reminders in the calendar app on my smartphone.
Get your calendars ready and fix your daily alarms so there are no surprise deadlines. Thinking ahead saves so much time. Plan out your daily breakfast and lunch routine and have an idea of what you’re going to wear during the week, even planning dinner ahead makes the night time routines smoother: It allows more time to finish school work and practice self-care after a long day. You can also link your school calendars like Blackboard to your personal calendars (Google, iCal, Outlook etc.), allowing you to see the dates your school provides (breaks and holidays) and professors due dates all in one convenient place.
Your peers, faculty, staff, and administration can provide invaluable support. You can find mentors, friends and academic assistance this school year if you’re willing to communicate. Do not be afraid to ask for help or even better lend a helping hand to those around you. We are all part of an educational community so being available to those around us regardless of the position they’re in will add to the betterment of the overall experience and will help foster school pride.
School is a place to discover and pursue the what sets our soul on fire. Use the privilege of an education to fuel your passions and embrace the academic struggles that will help shape you into a resilient learner but more important a well-rounded citizen. Earning, that diploma proves to everyone around you but more importantly yourself that you are able to take on a challenge and follow through to completion.
