2020. The year of Corona and her homegirls, quarantine, and an abundance of unprecedented events. What is not unprecedented, however, is that this is an election year. This year we had a presidential primary nationwide, state primaries (that are ongoing), and an upcoming Presidential election. Needless to say, this election, on both local and national levels, is the most consequential election of our lifetime. Check out some voting resources below!

Are You Registered To Vote?

If not, visit When We All Vote to register!

Florida Primary

The Florida Primary is taking place on Tuesday, August 18th, 2020. We are voting for local and state officials including circuit judges, school board officials, Supervisor of Elections, etc. Local elections are just as important as the presidential election. Early voting has already finished, but be sure to vote on election day if you have not voted already! You can visit Florida’s election site HERE.

General Election

The General Election is taking place on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2020. This is where we vote for members of Congress, state representatives, and the President of the United States. For more information on the candidates for President and Vice President, you can visit Vote Save America.

Vote-By-Mail

Due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, many voters feel safer voting by mail. This is a voting option that has been available for many elections but is important particularly during this time when covering your nose & mouth and social distancing is crucial to slow down the spread of this virus. For more information on voting by mail for the General Election in November, you can visit When We All Vote.

I voted by mail in the Primary election last week during the early voting period in South Florida, and I also requested my ballot via mail for the Presidential election in November. However, Florida has the option of mailing in your ballot or dropping your ballot off at designated polling locations or the supervisor of elections office. I encourage you to check your state’s policies on this option. We must ensure our vote is counted in a timely fashion and I encourage you all to vote early or mail in your ballot early!

A Voteless People is a Hopeless People.

All elections are important, but this election is an election that will change the course of our country. We are voting for our next President, RBG’s replacement on the Supreme Court, voting rights, women’s rights, racial equality and justice for Black and Brown people, healthcare, social security, immigration, climate change - the list goes on and on. There are many like the late Representative John Lewis who put his life on the line numerous times for Black people to have the right to vote. We owe it to our ancestors to cast our ballot. I truly believe, a voteless people is a hopeless people.
